- 100 small cucumbers
- 2½ quarts onions
- 3 large red peppers
- 3 pints vinegar
- 2¼ cups brown sugar
- 2 tbsp celery seed
- 2 tbsp white mustard seed
- salt
Slice cucumbers very fine.
Place a layer of cucumbers, onions and peppers.
Sprinkle with a handful of salt.
Repeat until all cucumbers are used up.
Cover with water and let stand overnight.
In the morning drain off the brine.
Bring the vinegar, brown sugar, celery seed & white mustard seed to a boil.
Put in the cucumbers and let it come to a boil.
Place in jars.
YUGOSLAVIAN CHRISTMAS COOKIES

- ½ lb. sweet butter
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 egg yolk
- ½ tsp. salt
- 4 egg whites
- 1 cup sugar
- ¾ cup finely ground walnuts
- 1 tsp. lemon extract
- 1 cup blackberry and current jelly
- 1 cup chopped walnuts
Cream butter with the ½ cup sugar.
Add egg yolk and salt.
Sift flour, measure, and stir into mixture.
Pat dough into a thin layer in the bottom of a 10x15" cooky sheet.
Beat egg whites until stiff; gradually add sugar and continue beating until of a meringue consistency.
Fold in the ground walnuts and flavoring.
Spread jelly over the dough and swirl meringue over jelly.
Sprinkle meringue with chopped walnuts,
Bake in a moderate oven ( 350°) for 40 minutes.
Cut into squares.
Makes three dozen cookies.

MULLED CRANBERRY PUNCH
- 1 Bottle 1 Qt. Cranberry-juice cocktail
- 2 Cups Apple Cider
- ¼ cup golden raisins
- 5 whole cloves
- 5 whole allspice
Combine cranberry-juice cocktail, cider, and raisins in a medium-size saucepan.
Tie cloves and allspice in a cheesecloth bag and add to the pan.
Heat slowly, 5 minutes, or just until warm; remove spice bag.
Ladle into stemmed glasses, adding some of the raisins to each; garnish each with an orange slice threaded onto a cinnamon stick if you wish.

SOUR CREAM COFFEE BREAD
Course after church coffee hour
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ cup butter or margarine
- 2 eggs
- ½ pint sour cream
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp soda
- Dash salt
Filling
- ½ cup chopped. walnuts
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- ½ cup sugar
- ¾ tsp. salt
Mix filling ingredients together in a small bowl
Cream butter and sugar, add. eggs, sour cream and vanilla.
Combine dry ingredients and add them to the butter mixture, blending lightly.
Pour half the batter into a lightly greased square pan and aprinkle with half the filling mixture.
Add remaining batter and sprinkle the remaining filling on top. Bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 40 minutes.
An Unusual Pound Cake

- 1 cup butter (soft) Or ½ cup soft butter and ½ cup heavy cream
- 2¾ cups sugar
- 6 eggs
- 3 cups all-purpose flour sifted 2-3 times
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp baking soda
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp almond extract
Preheat oven to 350°
Cream butter until light.
Gradually add sugar and beat (use a low mixture speed) until light and fluffy.
Add eggs (one at a time) and beat well after each addition.
Sift flour, salt, and baking soda together.
Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with the sour cream, beginning with the flour mixture.
Add the flavoring and stir lightly.
Do not overbeat.
Pour into an ungreased 9" tube pan and bake for 1 hour 20 minutes or until a straw inserted in the center comes out dry and not sticky.
Cool on wire cake rack.
