Prune Cake

Family lore always has the story of how grandma (or grandpa) always would make something that they were known for and refuse to write down the recipe. Until the time they did. Of course they would leave off the secret ingredient so no one else could make it like they did.

This recipe is an example of that. Someone type it up with all the ingredients, except one. We know it takes butter (per the instructions) but we have no idea how much to put in it.

Prune Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups flour sifted
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cloves
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs well beaten
  • 1 cup prunes (Or dates)
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • nuts

Instructions

  • Sift Flour
  • Add baking soda, spices and sift together three times.
  • Work butter until creamy.
  • Add sugar gradually beating after each addition until light and creamy.
  • Add eggs and prunes and beat until well blended.
  • Add flour alternately with milk, a small amount at a time, beating until smooth after each addition.
  • Turn into a greased pan.
  • Bake moderately (375º) about 40 minutes
