Old Fashioned Gingerbread

Ingredients

Gingerbread

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups flour sifted
  • 1 1/2 tsp soda
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 cup hot water

Caramel Sauce

  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 2 cups dark brown sugar
  • 8 ounces butter
  • 1/2 cup bourbon
  • 1 cup cream

Instructions

Gingerbread

  • Preheat oven to 325º, Not necessary to grease and flour pan.
  • Cream shortening and sugar
  • Add egg, molasses and beat well.
  • Add sifted dry ingredients and then hot water.
  • Beat until smooth.
  • Pour into baking pan and bake for 25-30 minutes. 
  • Serve warm with whipped cream or Caramel Sauce

Caramel Sauce

  • Boil together corn syrup, sugar and butter until mixture is the consistency of thick cream. 
  • Remove from heat and cool.
  • Add the cream and bourbon.
