April 1950 was the first time that Diocese of Buffalo awarded the newly created Boy Scout Pelican award. The Most Rev. John F O’Hara (yes the high school was named in honor of him) presented the award at St. Joseph New Cathedral.

The men receiving this award were:

  • Senecal Council: Dr. James L. Hayes (Olean)
  • Genesee Council: Francis J. Guppenberger (Batavia)
  • Niagara Frontier Council: John B. LaMunsch (Niagara Falls)
  • Chautauqua County Council: Bernard G. Dougherty (Dunkirk)
  • Lewiston Trail Council: William J. Madden (Lockport)

153 boys received the Ad Altare Dei Award. This award was started in 1926 to recognize Roman Catholic alter boys and is still awarded today.

One thing that has remained consistent in my family is Scouting. It started with my Great Grandfather Charles who was heavily involved with Scouting at both St. Ann’s Church in Buffalo, NY & at St. Matthew’s Church (also in Buffalo). My grandmother was not a scout herself but later was a Camp Fire Girls leader (so yes my mom was a Campfire Girl). I myself was a Gold Award Girl Scout & there are a few Eagle Scout cousins. My son is continuing the family tradition as a Cub Scout & my daughter will eventually be a Girl Scout.

For many years my great grandfather was involved with Troop 118 of St. Ann’s Church, as well as being involved with the Boy Scout Troop at St. Matthew’s Church (his parish after the move to Wyoming Avenue in Buffalo).  Charles was also a volunteer on the district level and was involved with Catholic Scouting Committees.
